October 11, 2010 –  Dr. M. Maitland DeLand, M.D., local radiation oncologist and author, recently won a Bronze Gold Ink! Award for her children’s book Katie Kate Tackles Questions About Cancer.

The Gold Ink! national awards are given to books that exhibit the highest technical merit in the design/printing facet of the book. “Greenleaf did an excellent job of incorporating highly technical printing techniques that add to the enjoyment of reading the story,” said DeLand. “When writing a book for children, the thickness of the paper, along with vibrant color and textures all play a part in the reading experience. Katie Kate gave us the opportunity to bring all of those elements together.”

Katie Kate Tackles Questions About Cancer is the first book designed to help young cancer patients understand their condition and overcome their fears, and is the first in a series of books aimed toward childhood illnesses. “With my own patients, I see the worry and fear that a cancer diagnosis brings,” said DeLand. “Katie Kate helps young patients get over the fear and worry associated with their illness by taking the young patient, step-by-step through their treatment, and eliminating all worries and fear.
